Unit 1 reflection piece

I found writing a personal piece like this fluency paper difficult. I had to reflect on the past topics and activities we covered in class to pull inspiration for this essay. The exercise that was the most helpful was the RZA podcast. I connect the most with this exercise because the RZA, the interviewee, has a long history with music, similar to my account with swimming. However the most prominent factor of this podcast was how passionate he was, you could tell he likes talking about his music, his creations. This was the best example for me of what it means to be literate in something because of how fluently he talked about his passion and it felt I connected with those emotions the best.

I see analysis in a similar light. Now that I have had more practice with it I understand the skill better, however analysis/argumentative papers have never been my strong suit so spending time with these types of articles so far this semester really widened my skill set when it comes to analysis papers. I think the most helpful thing we did in class for that skill set was actually the five minute journals, having to analyze my day, or a video every day was good practice for this paper.

We listened/read a lot of projects during and outside of class so far. Each project served its purpose. Some taught us how to write a statistical argumentative article ( is ice cream good for you). This was important because it taught the class skills to look at an argumentative essay in an statistical way (even though the stats were wrong). We also watched a video about a guys who held his break for the world record. This video leaned more into the becoming fluent part of this project. He tells the story of his training, failures, and eventually success. He shares his specific knowledge on his subject. This taught me about what it really took to become fluent in a area of passion.

The quotes in my paper are from blogs written by swimmers. I chose a swimmer’s blog because I knew I would connect with the post. Based on my definition of Fluency in the sport, I decided on specific blog posts. I chose one that talks about technique because that’s a significant factor in swimming fluency. The second blog post I decided to connect to my paper was about lane etiquette. You learn This skill as you become fluent, and once these skills are common sense, then you have become literate in swimming.

My topic of literacy changed. Initially, I would write about learning how to box, but I don’t feel fluent or literate in boxing. So then I moved to swimming, the sport I have been fully immersed in since childhood. I love swimming, but tension appears in my paper because I quit in the winter of my senior year. I got burnt out, swimming because it was not fun anymore. Now, I will always be a part of that community, and once you become fluent, you are forever, but the sport can sometimes be too intense.

If I had more time to work on this project, I would like to connect an art piece to my paper instead of my writing. But overall, it was a good exercise for me and my analysis skills.
